In this stage Environmental Problems go global.
Please research each of these three areas and explain why they were so important in helping environmental awareness.
Key Points to consider form this video.
- Application of Science as a black and white, cause and effect.
- Easy to understand with Cartoons.
- Use of popular culture.
- Direct link to YOUR actions.
- Global.
- The Big C, Cancer.
- Direct action can be taken.
Points to consider from the video.
- Mainstream society.
- Intolerance of disagreement.
- Political Correctness.
- Eco-Morality.
- Culture conflicts with empiricism.
Points to Consider from this video.
Direct challenge to assumptions about society.
Questions what makes people happy.
Globalization of impacts.
reward and punish
ReplyDeleteclarifies what global warming is fundamentally, uses animation to captivate younger audience, taking explanation process step by step and simplified
give examples (smoking coming out of vehicles, factories)
explains it through temperature, an easy avenue for understanding
explains ozone layer through umbrella, helps visualize more complex concepts
Very Very bad! Punished because he was causing Global Warming: suggesting that humanity does not understand the problems they are causing and the effects of the greenhouse effect.
ReplyDelete1. Reflection of suns rays off earths surface and bounced back onto earths surface. As a result of increased greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere, heat in the suns rays is trapped to warm the earth. However, increasing gases causes excessive trapping of heat - changing earths climate - earth is becoming warmer.
2. Furthermore, removal of trees is further causing an increase in Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. As trees absorb CO2, the lack and removal of large areas of forests increase the amount of CO2 in the air.
3. CFC's cause holes in ozone layers: due to hairspray, refrigerators..ext
Stamp of Black and White authority, scientific authority that dictates Global warming belief. Creating Eco morality - responsible citizen: and the belief that humans cause GW and if you don't believe that than you are seen as immoral and ostracised.
DeleteWhat makes people happy:
DeleteAssumption that we will always be able to improve standards of living: exponential growth. Speed of growth increases: and environment will be able to absorb us.
Assumption that economic growth improves happiness: not the case. Once your basic needs have been fulfilled the more stuff you have does not effect happiness, diminishing return.
Environmental impacts of globalisation:
Assumption of Eco damage is slowly and over period of time: very difficult for human brain to see incrimental changes. Limits to growth have said: no it isnt liniar it isnt slow, and BOOM all of a sudden you will wake up one day and things will be different.
Table cloth analogy: equivilent to the econmomic development but you cant fold things more than 8 times. By 2010 we have folded our table cloth too many times, and now things are going to start going wrong.
Direct challenges to assumptions about societies:
- Green house gases in the correct amount is essential for our survival as it traps heat
ReplyDelete- Large amounts of green house gases however is damaging; causes global warming
- Ozone absorbs UV rays - CFCS are destroying the ozone
Easy to understand for younger audiences. Process of global warming is simplified and told by giving examples(comparing the umbrella to the ozone).
IPCC: Global organisation to tackle climate change
DeleteCounter argument: Climate change is not caused by human CO2 emissions
- in the past there has been 10 times the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere
Direct challenge to assumptions of society:
Delete- growth is not linear, it is exponential
- growth will slow down
Once basic Maslow needs are fulfilled, you look for more needs to satisfy
- It is very difficult to observe the slow changes in the environment; there will be a tipping point when the environment will drastically change
Environmental impacts of globalisation:
- eco-morality- if you don't hold that concept then you are at the fringes of society
ReplyDelete- IPCC: Global organizations to tackle climate change
Counter arguments: Climate change is not caused by human CO2 emissions
What makes people happy:
ReplyDelete-once basic maslow needs are fulfilled, having more things will decrease your satisfaction
Environmental impacts of globalization:
Direct challenge to assumptions about society:
- rather than linear growth, it is exponential and the environment is able to take that.
- We think that environmental change is not incremental and slow, however, after the tipping point people will start to realize the consequences
