Growth of Air Freight and Polluting Industries.

Growth of Air Freight and Polluting Industries.

For the lesson on 11 November after CAS week we will be looking at the

Growth of Air Freight and Polluting Industries.

You will be split in two groups, each group will be responsible for researching  their area and will teach it in the lesson.

Air Freight and Food Miles please click here for the Google Pres.  Click here for ISLE page.

Examine the concept of food miles and the environmental consequences of increasing volumes of air freight.

Polluting industries click here for Google Pres.   Click here for ISLE page.

Discuss the reasons for and consequences of the relocation of polluting industries (such as some TNCs) and waste disposal (such as ICT, chemical and nuclear waste) to countries with weaker environmental controls and safety regulations.

Gulf Oil Timeline.

Gulf Oil Timeline.

Please make notes in the comment box about the Gulf Oil disaster.  You should make notes on 4 slides each and starting with the first slide (there are 24 slides in total).  This means as a class we would have made nots on the full presentation together.

Write your comments in this format.

Counting the cost.

Disclose.tv - Monsatan Exposed! - 'May The Force Be With NO2GMO!'
There are many benefits to large scale farming.  However there is not a full accounting method to account for the social and environmental costs.

We do not know.   Another concern is we simply do not know how all the chemicals could be dangerous.  Classic examples include DDT, once thought harmless but not banned in most MEDC.

The Union of Concerned Scientist The Union of Concerned Scientist are very concerned about Endocrine Disrupters found in runoff from farming.

Environmental Benefits.

But agro- industrialization  has facilitated urbanization and a huge rise in the standard of living.  Your answers must acknowledge this.  The key is finding a balance between the conflicting demands of agro- industrialization  and the environment.  Take care not to demonize agro- industrialization .

Environmental Concerns

Environmental Concerns.

1. Use of agrochemicals e.g. pesticides, herbicides, fertilisers, insecticides.
3. Eutropihication and algal blooms.
4. Effluent e.g. from Confined Animal Feeding Operations.
5. Swine Flu and BSE.

In the comment box please make notes on one of the above. Please make sure as a group all 5 are covered.

Key Ideas for this unit.

Key ideas and terms.

  • Agro- industrialization / Agri-business.
  • Mechanization.
  • Globalization.
  • International networks for obtaining cheap inputs and selling outputs.
  • There is a widening gap between rich and poor farmers.
  • MEDCs are increasingly securing their food supplies from LEDCs.
  • Monoculture vs. interculture.
  • Large scale agro-industrial operations are financially efficient but very environmentally inefficient.
  • The most inefficient agriculture includes grain feed beef and ocean fishing.

Confined Animal Feed operations (CAFO)

Watch the above video and make notes in the comment box.  Once the video has finished watch another in pairs and share the link. Make notes in the comment box, please ensure you do not watch the same video as another group.

Once you have done this.

In the comment box add you definition of CAFO and list the top five impacts on the environment in your opinion.

Also explain why there has been a trend towards CAFO. Consider economic and demographic reasons for this trend.

Environment and Change.

Identify the effects of agro-industrialization and changes in international production and consumption on the physical environment.

Please open this link to access the Google Doc for this unit of work.

Watch this video and makes notes in the comment section, here are some guidelines for you.

What examples of agro- industrialization can you see in the video.

What environmental problems could be generated?

.

Working in pairs. Once you have watched the video choose another from the choices at the end.  Please review you chosen video in the same way in the comment box.  Please make sure you do not review the same video as another person in the class.
